Details
From indie film to mainstream thriller: this book tracks the career of Canadian film-maker Atom Egoyan. In this book, Julia von Lucadou analyses the thematic, aesthetic and dramaturgical strategies that unite and distinguish Egoyan’s feature films. She divides the films into two time periods, the first stretching from NEXT OF KIN to CALENDAR, the second from EXOTICA to CHLOE. The emphasis of her analysis lies on Egoyan’s portrayal of memory. Lucadou demonstrates how Egoyan’s focus shifts from exploring the media’s impact on human memory to depicting memory’s influence on the psyche. The author reviews the historical and cultural context of the films in terms of Egoyan’s dual role as an Armenian and Canadian film-maker, and the influence of postmodern media theory. Finally, Lucadou discusses whether Egoyan’s filmic evolution changes his status as an auteur.
