These collected letters from Virchow to Heinrich Schliemann, a figure close to him both personally and intellectually, together with Schliemann’s own letters, are published here for the first time in a critical edition based on the original manuscripts. They were previously unknown in this form. The correspondence shows Schliemann in a light unfamiliar to international scholarship and will form a significant new contribution to the study of his life. In addition, the letters also contain much that is new and of interest for academic historians, such as Virchow’s and Schliemann’s struggles over the interpretation of the finds from Troy, which will also provide new stimuli for modern research.
