Details
Sound and sound design shed light on central components of Herbert von Karajan's conducting. These aspects go back to the beginnings of his work, of which he said: "I actually heard two different orchestras at the same time: firstly the actual sound, the result of my work with the real orchestra, and secondly an ideal sound that was superimposed on it." In later years, this complex perspective, which integrates a variety of sensory experiences, also manifested itself in making the visualization of musical interpretation through images and filming as well as the respective cover design of the image/sound carriers holistically perceptible. The contributions in this anthology attempt to take these aspects of Karajan's work into account by applying the latest, empirically supported methods of analyzing musical processes and cinematic implementations and by examining Karajan's interpretations against the background of older performance traditions. Finally, cultural-political aspects of Karajan's work will be addressed and the various highlights will be reflected upon in detail in a concluding panel discussion.
