This book provides information about criminal law in the German Democratic Republic, Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia during the era of socialism. It aims to reveal the relationship between the legal philosophical debates on socialist law since Marx and the practice of socialist criminal law in those countries. The latter is analysed in several chosen fields of practice, for example the death penalty in the GDR, the assessment of punishment in Poland or the crime of “rioting” in Czechoslovakia.
