The East, the West, and China's Growth: Challenge and Response

Increasingly the sphere of Chinese culture is of key importance regarding the economic and socio-political changes in the Asia-Pacific region. The dynamic growth set in motion by the integration of Taiwan, Hong Kong and the People’s Republic of China has become a challenge to the West as well as to the other economies in the region. With the assistance of the Volkswagen Foundation an international symposium was organized in July 1994. It brought together a number of leading experts from Japan, China, Australia, Europe and the USA for the purpose of discussing the prospects of China’s development, while at the same time comparing Western and Asia-Pacific interpretations and views. Containing the revised presentations, the present volume examines in depth the diverse aspects of the problem, from political and social developments in „Greater China“ and the structural changes in the Asia-Pacific region to relations between China and the European Union, further supported by a wealth of data material. The volume will be indispensable for anybody wishing to study closely the developments in the region, being of equal relevance to the scientific as well as practice-oriented readership.
