Description
US economic sanctions are very far-reaching and conflicts with internationally active companies and other states are inevitable. The basic principles of the sanction programmes and the sanction practice are complicated. Particularly in the area of financial transactions, at first glance, the link is not obvious. This poses problems for European financial institutions in particular. And even if there is no such link, there is a danger that secondary sanctions will be imposed by US authorities. US authorities are at the limits of what is recognised under international law and regularly cross those borders. The author examines a part of US sanctions practice as to compatibility with international law, illustrates US law by way of example and points out the possible legal consequences of US sanctions.
