The political culture of all current EU candidate countries is in the midst of fundamental changes since more than a decade. Beside the enormous economic and political processes of change, the impact of reforms towards EU membership on the political culture and the society of every EU candidate country has been enormous and continuous to be so. In order to better understand the debates, processes of chance and challenges in the EU candidate countries, a new and unique publication by ZEI broadens the horizon of those interested in the matter. Distinguished scholars from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Cyprus and Malta, but also from Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey, whose EU membership is less imminent, portray the convulsive developments in their respective country.
Gabor Erdödy, the editor of this volume, is historian at Eotvos-Lorant-University Budapest and external Senior Fellow at the Center for European Integration Studies. From 1992 until 1997, he was Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary in Germany. Since the end of 2002, he is serving in the same capacity at the Holy See.
