Description
Vulnerance (specifically human violence) is increasing noticeably in all areas of life – personal and political, social and cultural, and, not least, in religious life. But the paradoxical effects of power operative between vulnerability, vulnerance, and resilience are underestimated. The vulnerability paradox states that it is precisely protection and security strategies that can increase vulnerability and weaken resilience. Conversely, the expenditure paradox shows how increasing vulnerability becomes a resilience process and thus resists the threat of vulnerance.

This transdisciplinary research study builds a long overdue and socially highly relevant bridge between vulnerability and resilience research.

Prof. Dr. Hildegund Keul, theologian, religious studies scholar, and Germanist, has been working in theological and interdisciplinary vulnerability research since 2010 and. She has been the heads director of the DFG-funded research project “Vulnerabilities” at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg since 2018.
