Looking back on his decades-long work as a university lecturer and researcher, the author of this study reappraises twelve books which were regarded as particularly worth reading during the early stages of his career and, in doing so, confirms their contemporary relevance. Although he adopts a very subjective and personal perspective throughout, he is still able to convey a sense of the atmosphere in liberal arts circles in the 1960s and 1970s. The opinions expressed in the works of Buber, Gehlen, Mitscherlich, Adorno and Metz among others, which he had initially dismissed, provide enlightening insights into current debates.
