This book’s point of departure is the finding that modern societies are knowledge-based societies. It is generally accepted that an efficient cognitive infrastructure is essential for them to function. A closer look reveals that this cognitive infrastructure of knowledge-based societies consists of several elements, namely the exploration of decentralised knowledge stocks, the diversity of knowledge processing, the regulation of access to knowledge resources and the task of the legal system to provide appropriate regulatory structures. In this respect, the traditional focus on the cognitive dimension of law must be extended to include the legal dimension of knowledge.
