Description
This study deals with the life of the Wallachian voivode Vlad III. In addition to a biographical sketch, the focus is on two sources that ascribe monstrous characteristics to the prince: the "Geschicht dracole waide" and Michel Beheim's "Trakle waida". Similar strategies of othering are also found in contemporary anti-Ottoman propaganda. It is shown that such othering mechanisms are applied to Vlad in order to show him as a monstrously Ottoman antagonist figure. The aim of this approach was to advertise the ‚Türkenkampf‘ on the one hand and to stage the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus as the conqueror of the monstrous on the other.
