Musik ist in der Vielfalt ihrer Erscheinungsformen, Praktiken und theoretischen Beschreibungen untrennbar verbunden mit den sie umgebenden sozio-kulturellen Kontexten und Diskursen. Diese scheinbar äußeren Faktoren sind vom ›Innermusikalischen‹ nicht zu trennen. Die Bände der Reihe Die Gesellschaft der Musik untersuchen musikalische Phänomene aus komplementären kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Perspektiven. Themen und Ansätze reichen dabei von einer historischen Anthropologie der Musik bis zu einer ›Musiksoziologie des Digitalen‹.
